2003 Newsletter H appy Holidays! Looking back on 2003, I realize what an exciting year it has been for C. Eule Dance. It couldn't have been possible without the help of so many creative, talented, and supportive people. Our year began with the benefit party in March where a good time was had by all, while raising half of the funds needed for the Spring Season. Special thanks to Carmen Smith who had the brilliant idea for the event and catered it, along with sushi chef Satoshi Karasawa, and to auctioneer extraordinaire, Aaron Kesselman. Many beautiful items and services were donated thanks to generous friends; the most valuable being a full session of Japanese lessons from the Tenri Cultural Institute. Clean Springing 2 at the Williamsburg
Art neXus was a sold-out two-night success, which included live performances
by the Jann Klose Band, lighting design by Tony Marques, and guest choreographers
Yoel Cassel, Laura Peterson, and Sduduzo Ka'Mbili of Juxtapower. We
premiered One Little Chance, the famous palm tree piece (designed by
Eduardo Garabal), that snowballed into performances all over New York
with the Jann Klose Band. We made appearances at the Pelham Street Fair,
The NYC Pride Parade, The Williamsburg Bridge 100th Birthday Celebration,
and the D.U.M.B.O. (not the elephant) Dance Festival. Those fortunate
enough to play palm trees included Alpin Hong, Aaron Kesselman, Kazum
Motomura, Matthew Wagner, David M. Zlotchew, and the lovely Shauna Hoskin.
Another popular piece this year was With Their Backs Exposed, a contemporary
ballet danced on pointe with music created for the piece by Jon Diaz
and the Drone Twins. The dance was selected to be presented at The Elan
Awards, a prestigious ceremony of dance, honoring choreographer/director
Rob Marshall. Other performances this year included a site-specific
improvisational work for "War and Dolls," and art installation
by Samara Sussman at Pratt University, and the quartet "Embrace"

which was presented as part of The Remember Project at St. Mark's Church, a 12-hour dance event hosted by Dancers Responding to Aids to raise money for people living with AIDS. Besides the creative performing artists, there are also several visual artists who have contributed to C. Eule Dance's success this year. Myra Margolin designed the C. Eule Dance logo and business card, Terrell Johnson designed the postcards for Clean Springing 2, and Masa Nemoto voluntarily designed my web site, constantly updates it, and filmed and edited all of my videos. Dancers who have performed with C. Eule Dance this year, who I have not yet mentioned, include Lauren Alzamora, Kyla Ernst-Alper, Yuu Fujita, Gail Giovanniello, Erin Hunter, Faith Hunter, Tina Lee, Edgar L. Peterson, III, Cesly Placenti, Carmen Smith, Gisela Quinteros, and Alexa Weir. I feel so fortunate to be able to work with all these amazing people. For next year, I have recieved a Harkness Space Grant at the 92nd Street Y that will allow me to create my next work, a collaboration with pianist Alpin Hong. I have also begun work on a new piece, Suite Brazil, which will be set to music by various Brazilian composers. I presented a portion of this piece in November at HATCH, an evening of works-in-progress at Jennifer Muller, The Works Studio. I plan on having another benefit party in the early part of the year, and am currently looking into venues for a concert in Spring, 2004. Thanks for all your support and enthusiasm in 2003. I wish you the best for the New Year! |
